Phyllis Bailey
Senior Information Manager
pbailey@usm.maine.edu
Phyllis Bailey has a long and distinguished career in working to improve options
for older Americans which led her to the position of Senior Information Manager
at the Community Partnerships for Older Adults (CPFOA) National Program Office
in 2006.
According to Bailey, “I have the capacity to spot opportunities
for creative and practical solutions which strengthen people’s options
to live well in their homes as long as they want. I also keep my eye on the
big picture about what it may take to make this happen. And I understand the
frontline reality of being a caregiver to older relatives.”
In her current
position, Bailey is able to use those skills as she creates tools to help communities
develop locally-based strategies that address the challenges of aging populations.
She is creating baseline information about what is being accomplished by CPFOA’s
15 grantees across the nation so their work can be leveraged by others. “I
am working hard to tell the story of what a difference it is making that people
are working in Partnerships, and of the power of their collaborative work in
giving birth to wide-ranging solutions in which local communities have a stake.
It is making such a difference that people from many different perspectives,
not just the ‘usual suspects’,
are engaging in these conversations together. The ideas & solutions are
richer for it.”
Prior to joining CPFOA – a program of the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation – Phyllis
Bailey’s career spanned roles developing corporate elder care initiatives
for large companies; creating products to help caregiver employees across the
country take care of older relatives; starting-up & managing assisted living
developments; and college teaching in a BSW program. During much of her career
in the field of aging, she was also a caregiver to her aging parents through
the end of their lives.
She holds a Masters in Social Work from Catholic University
and engaged in PhD studies in Aging Policy & Programs at the Heller School,
Brandeis University, as well as studies in community economic development at
Southern New Hampshire University.
Phyllis Bailey’s commitment to the
rights and lives of older adults is solid. As she says, “I am passionate
about the right of people to age well at home in communities they love;, with
choices, dignity and the ongoing potential to make a contribution.”
